Economic news and forex volatility

Read releases in context and understand the execution risks around market-moving news.

Start with the release and its context

Employment, inflation, growth and central-bank announcements can influence currency markets. The result matters alongside expectations, revisions and the details behind the headline.

A higher or lower figure does not produce a fixed market response. Several announcements can arrive together, and an initial move may reverse as participants interpret the information.

Check the original schedule

Use the publishing institution’s calendar and confirm the release time and timezone. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes schedules and releases for employment and inflation statistics. Other countries have their own statistical agencies and central banks.

Distinguish the newly released value from a revised previous value. Forecasts are expectations, not official results, and a calendar’s impact label is not a promise of a particular price move.

Understand the execution conditions

Around a major announcement, spreads may widen and available liquidity can change. Orders may fill at a different price from the one expected; gaps or delays can occur.

A stop-loss is not a guarantee of execution at its requested level. A strategy that appears attractive using smooth historical candles may behave differently when actual bid/ask prices and execution conditions are included.

Build scenarios rather than predictions

Before an event, record what information you are watching, which positions are exposed and what would invalidate your assumptions. Consider both favourable and adverse outcomes, including no clear reaction.

Waiting for conditions to settle or choosing not to trade is also a decision. No universal entry delay, position-size reduction or stop distance is appropriate for every release.

Review what actually happened

Record the release, the market response, spreads, expected and actual fills, and any rule changes. Separate errors in the idea from errors in execution.

Automated systems add their own data, connection and configuration risks. Faster processing does not establish a profitable advantage or remove the need for testing.
